G.I Tags

A geographical indication (GI) is a label that is applied to items that have a specific geographical origin and that have traits or a reputation that are due to that origin.

Have you heard of Aranmula Kannadi, a unique Kerala handcraft, or Kanchipuram Sarees from Tamil Nadu, or Bihar's Madhubani Paintings? These are all one-of-a-kind items from a certain location.

These products now have a Geographical Indication label on them.

A geographical indication right allows those who have the right to use the indicator to prevent it from being used by a third party whose product does not meet the requirements.

For example, in the jurisdictions in which the Darjeeling geographical indication is protected, producers of Darjeeling tea can exclude the use of the term “Darjeeling” for tea not grown in their tea gardens or not produced according to the standards set out in the code of practice for the geographical indication

Important point Related to G.I Tags

· As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), India passed the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, which took effect on September 15, 2003. Darjeeling Tea was the first Indian product to be designated as having a geographical indicator. The well-known beverage gained popularity in 2004.
