The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a premier domestic Twenty20 (T20) cricket tournament in India, organized annually by the IPL Governing Council under the aegis of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Format of the IPL

• Teams are divided into two groups of five
• Each team plays two matches against the other four teams in its group and one match against four teams from the other group, determined randomly.
• The top four teams based on points from the group stage qualify for the playoffs.
• The playoffs consist of qualifiers and eliminators, culminating in the final where the champion is decided.

IPL Teams and Evolution

Over the years, the IPL has witnessed several franchise changes:

• The inaugural season (2008) had eight teams, including Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders.
• 2011 saw the addition of Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India, although Kochi Tuskers lasted only a single season.
• Deccan Chargers ceased operations in 2012 and were replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013.
• Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended in 2016 and 2017 due to a betting scandal, replaced temporarily by Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiants.
• In 2022, the league expanded with Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.
